Juneteenth Recognition for Young Women’s Freedom Center Oakland

June 28, 2024

In the words of the National Museum of African American History & Culture, Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day. For the third year since Juneteenth became a federal holiday, RDA Consulting made a financial contribution to an Oakland-based organization nominated by our staff that works for Black independence and empowerment.

This year, RDA Consulting selected the Oakland Young Women’s Freedom Center (YWFC Oakland) as the recipient of the Juneteenth donation. For more than 30 years, Young Women’s Freedom Center has provided support, mentorship, training, employment, and advocacy to young women and trans youth of all genders. In their own words, Young Women’s Freedom Center focuses on those who have grown up in poverty, experienced the juvenile legal and foster care systems, have had to survive living and working on the streets, and who have experienced significant violence in their lives.

Launched in 2018, YWFC Oakland has become an alternative to incarceration and working in the underground street economy. The center provides direct support for impacted youth to build their power and leadership – providing training, mentorship, and employment.

YWFC Oakland, we are honored to support your work!

Other organizations nominated by RDA Staff include We Lead Ours (WELO), APTP, Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURJ), Oakland Black Business Fund aka BBF Black Business Fund, and Roots Community Health Center. We stand in admiration of all of these organizations and their ongoing work.

RDA Consulting’s mission is to create equity-centered, evidence-driven solutions to positively transform systems and services for underserved communities. Observing the Juneteenth Holiday provides space for our team to reflect, learn, and participate in actions that foster the further development of racially equitable and inclusive communities.

Supporting Juneteenth and Abundant Opportunities

We know that poverty disproportionately affects Black women and children in the US, which compounds disparities in maternal and child health. These disparities, an effect of systemic racism, are further exacerbated by social and economic stressors. The results of poverty, including lack of safe housing and access to healthy food, and the stress created by…
